Readings from the living Bible

One of the toughest questions Christians face

Genesis 18 verse 25

That wouldn’t be right!  Surely you wouldn’t do such a thing, to kill the godly with the wicked.  Why, you would be treating godly in wicked people the same!  Surely you wouldn’t do that.  Should not the Judge of all the earth be fair?

And God replied, if I find 50 godly people there, I will spare the entire city for their sake.

Then Abraham spoke again.  Since I have begun, let me go on and speak further to the Lord, though I am but dust and ashes.  Suppose there are only 45?  You destroy the city for the lack of five?

And God said, “I will not destroy it if I find 45.”

Then Abraham went further with his request.  “Suppose there are only 40?”

And God replied, “I won’t destroy it if there are 40.”

“Please don’t be angry,” Abraham pleaded.  “Let me speak: suppose only 30 are found there?”

And God replied, “I won’t do it if there are 30 there.”

Then Abraham said, “since I have dared to speak to God, let me continue — suppose there are only 20?”

And God said, “then I won’t destroy it for the sake of the 20.”

Finally, Abraham said, “oh, let not the Lord be angry; I will speak but this one’s more!  Suppose only 10 are found?”

And God said, “then, for the sake of the 10, I won’t destroy it.”

So what is this question that I speak about as one of the toughest questions that we as Christian’s face from others?

I would like to get your opinion on this on how you would answer this.

If our God is a God of love than how do we explain him wiping out huge masses of people?

We see above Abraham pleading to God for the people of Sodom and Gomorrah.  Abraham, one of the most beloved of God, the father of all nations, questions God and pleads with God to spare anyone who fears the Lord and loves the Lord in that city.  We see in the Old Testament many occasions where God’s people were protected and also many times where God wiped out groups of people.

Have you ever face this question?

Have you had someone approached you about this?

If we serve a loving God then how come, even in today’s world, even under the new covenant of the New Testament, to the godly get wiped out just the same as the wicked?

I find this a very difficult issue to deal with when speaking to either the unchurched or those questioning a walk with the Lord.

It’s easy to just say that there are mysteries of the Lord that will be unanswered on this side of heaven, but that’s not good enough for those whom we love who have these questions.  That answer does not satisfy them.  So how do you deal with this question when people ask you this?  How do you respond?
