Today in Church we discussed leadership and in particular the model that Jesus displayed just before Judas turned him over to be crucified.
In John 13 we find Jesus and his disciples all together and after they had eaten, Jesus took off his garments and wrapped himself in a towel and then proceeded to grab a water basin and get down on his knees and watch the feet of each of the 12 disciples.
Now when we typically mention the word of leadership, many times we see or imagine leadership in relation to power, dictorialship, someone who orders others around and overall is self serving in nature.
It is about what they can get out of it.
In the model we
see displayed by Jesus, he is teaching something very important to his disciples about leadership. Washing of feet is looked down upon as a menial job that certainly a person of statue and power would not be caught doing.
I am sure back then, that feet got pretty nasty as almost everyone either had open toed sandals or no shoes at all.
Peter was furious and refused to have his feet washed by Jesus, but Jesus told him that Peter would have NO part of heaven if he was not willing to allow Jesus to serve him.
Through this action, Jesus was teaching a very important lesson about Servant Leadership. It is very much backwards from what most people preach about leadership or from what we see from people in leadership today.
It kind of goes along with a saying from one of my favorite motivational speakers, Zig Ziglar…”Help enough other people get what they want and you will get what you want.”
This is not the norm in an all about me society that we live in today. But this is exactly the kind of leadership we need to see from all of us who are in Christ.
