In one of these meetings he told them not to leave Jerusalem until the Holy Spirit came upon them in fulfillment of the father’s promise, a matter he had previously discussed with them.

John baptized you with water, he reminded them, but you shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit in just a few days.

Another time when he appeared to them, they asked him, more, are you going to free Israel from Rome now and restore us as an independent nation?

The father sets those dates, he replied, and they are not for you to know.  But when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, you will receive power to preach with great effect to the people in Jerusalem, throughout Judea, in Samaria, into the ends of the earth, about my death and resurrection.

It was not long afterwards that he was left in a disappeared into a cloud, leading them staring after him.  As they were straining their eyes for another glimpse, suddenly 2 white robed men were standing there among them, and said, men of Galilee, why are you standing here staring at the sky?  Jesus has gone away to heaven, and Sunday, just as he went, he will return.

They were at the Mount of olives when this happened, so now they walked the half-mile back to Jerusalem and held a prayer meeting in an upstairs room of the house where they were staying.

Here is the list of those who were present at the meeting: Peter, John, James, Andrew, Philippe, Thomas, Bartholomew, Matthew, James (son of Alpheaeus), Judas (son of James), and the brothers of Jesus.  Several women, including Jesus’s mother, were also there.

Acts 2:1-4

Seven weeks had now gone by since Jesus’s death and resurrection, and the day of Pentecost arrived.  As the believers met together that day, suddenly there was a sound like the roaring of the mighty gale in the skies above them and it filled the house where they were meeting.  Then, what looked like flames or tongues of fire appeared and settled on their heads, and everyone present was filled with the Holy Spirit and began speaking in languages he didn’t know, for the Holy Spirit gave them this ability.

Sam’s response

So what is the purpose of getting baptized?  We can look at the Scriptures and get some ideas from Mak16:15 – 18.  And then he told them, you are to go into all the world and preach the good news to everyone, everywhere.  Those who believe and are baptized will be saved.  But those who refuse to believe will be condemned.  In those who believe shall use my authority to cast out demons, and they shall speak new languages.  They will even be able to handle snakes with safety, and if they drink anything poisonous, it will not hurt them, and they will be able to place their hands on the sick and healed them.

So when we look at the purpose of getting baptized, we can see in the above Scripture that we are to be walking the same authority that Christ walked in when he was here on earth as a man.

If we are tuned in to what God is doing around us, God will bring opportunities to us to help others be free from the bondage of this world.  There is no question we are walking in the spirit of the Lord that is the authority of the Lord, that is our spirit can rise above any Satanic forces that are here are on earth.

Jesus said when he left that he would send another, that another, is the Holy Spirit.  When you receive the holy spirit and are baptized in the name of a the Holy Spirit, Jesus, and the father, you too can walk with the same authority, the same power, the same gifting, that Jesus walked in when he was with us in the flesh.

There is no question when we seek the Lord, and listen to the Holy Spirit within us, that opportunities to impact others around us will grow.  This is why it is so important to be walking with the Lord daily, to be seeking the Lord daily, to be listening to the spirit inside of us, and to obey and to be obedient to the word of God.

Lord, we seek your will today.  We ask you to guide us through the Holy Spirit that is within us when we expected Jesus as our Lord and Savior.  Lord make us hungry for you, help us to put down the ways of this world into desire you up buffing beyond anything else in our lives.  Give us strength Lord, that is from you and you alone.  Help us to be guided by the Spirit of the Lord, and to see you working in our lives daily.  Help us to be tuned in closely to our spirit, and help us to obey whatever it is you have in store for us today.
