Readings from the living Bible

Habakkuk Chapter 2

I will climb my watchtower now, and wait to see what answer God will give to my complaint.

And the Lord said to me, “Write my answer on a billboard, large and clear, so that anyone can read it at a glance and rush to tell the others.

But these things I plan won’t happen right away. Slowly, steadily, surely, the time approaches when the vision will be fulfilled. It did seem slow, do not despair, or these things will surely come to pass. Just be patient! They will not be overdue a single day!

“Note this; wicked men trust themselves alone as these Chaldeans do, and fail; but the righteous men trust in me, and lives! What’s more, these arrogant Chaldeans are betrayed by all their wine, for it is treacherous. In their greed they have collected many nations, but like death and hell, they are never satisfied.

The time is coming when all their captives will cart them, saying: “you robbers ! At last justice has caught up with you! Now you will get your desserts for your oppression and extortion!”

“Suddenly your debtors will rise up in anger and turn on you intake all you have, while you stand trembling and helpless. You have ruined many nations; now they will ruin you. You murderers! You have filled the countryside with lawlessness in all the cities too.

“Woe to you for getting rich by evil means, attempting to live beyond the reach of danger. By the murderers you commit, you have shamed your name and forfeited your lives.

The very stones in the walls of your home cry out against you, in the beams in the ceiling echo what they say.

“Woe to you build cities with money gained from murdering and robbery! Has not the Lord decreed that godless nations games will turn to ashes in their hands? They work so hard, but all in vain!

The time will come when all the earth is filled, as the waters fill the sea, with an awareness of the glory of the Lord.

“Woe to you for making your neigh neighboring lands real and stagger like drunkards beneath your blows, and then gloating over their nakedness and shame. Soon your own glory will be replaced by Shane. Drink down God’s judgment on yourselves. Stagger and fall! You cut down the forest of Lebanon — now you will be cut down! You terrified the wild animals you caught in your traps — now terror will strike you because of all your murdering in violence in cities everywhere.

“What profit was bare and worshiping all your man-made idols? What a foolish lie that they could help escalation Mark what fools you were to trust what you yourselves had made.

Woe to those who command their lifeless wouldn’t idols to a rise in save them, who call out to be speechless stone to tell them what to do. The images speak for God? They are overlaid with gold and silver, but there is no breath at all inside!

“But the Lord is in his holy temple; but all the earth be silent before him.”

These are interesting times that we live in. Over the course of the last few years we’ve seen the greed of capitalism do things that I’ve hurt many people. We all remember Enron and the fall of that mighty company as they were worshiping their idol of money. Many of those top executives now are sitting in jail as they’ve frauded many people and were caught.

Just yesterday, we see the top executives to oil companies were trying to defend a horrific oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, and not one of them willing to accept the blame.

Justice will prevail… and I’m not talking about worldly justice! As in the above Scripture is pointed out that God’s timetable is perfect and it will come.

You cannot serve two gods! Today, for many people their God is their money! Now I’m not here to knock capitalism and the right to earn money. But I am here to point out the fact of what the way that you earn that money in who you hurt on the way to earn that money is going to come back and bite you.

Jesus talked about the difficulties of the rich and their ability to put God in their lives. There are many references in the Bible about this exact issue. Jesus remarked that it would be more difficult for the rich to get into heaven due to the fact that they would not see a need for God in their lives!

There’s a particular story where a man was very zealous to serve Jesus! He came to Jesus and said he wanted to serve him. Jesus told him if he really wanted to serve him, then go sell everything he has and give the money to the poor! This man walked away distraught as he was very rich.

You will have to choose what master you will serve. It’s not that you cannot be rich and serve Jesus because that’s not true. It is in the way that you make that money and what you do with that money that God blesses you with that will determine standards of who you hold up in your life as your master.

Ethics and morality are being pushed aside today in society in return for living a lifestyle that is exorbitant and godless. Jesus said this would happen and it is.
